At Dental Art, we understand how much grinding your teeth can have an impact on your life from mild discomfort to debilitating symptoms. We offer a range of splints to protect your teeth and alleviate the jaw pain and can also place Botulinum Toxin injections into the jaw muscles to weaken them to bring relief for around 3-6 months.

Many people subconsciously grind their teeth in times of stress or during sleep. When coming together, the strong force of the teeth and jaws can cause toothwear and microfractures, resulting in prematurely worn teeth. This can also lead to a range of tooth and jaw muscle pain, headaches and poor sleep.

FAQs

  • Mouthguards are dental devices that cover your teeth. A mouthguard protects your teeth, tongue, gums and cheeks from trauma caused by teeth grinding. All of our mouthguards are professionally fitted and customised to your needs, offering the best comfort and protection.

  • There are number of mouthguard options we can provide here at Dental Art. Depending on the degree of grinding and tooth wear noted your dentist will advise which type of mouthguard is best for your case.

See below for some of the options available:

    SOFT NIGHTGUARD

This is made from a soft flexible clear plastic that fits over your teeth, it is the most simple type of splint and has many uses which aim to protecting your teeth and any dental work from your grinding forces at night time.

    B SPLINTS

This splint design keeps your teeth apart at the back. You can not physically contact your teeth so they can no longer traumatically clash. It relaxes your muscles so you can no longer clench or grind to reduce the damaging effects of tooth grinding.

    MICHIGAN SPLINTS

The splint is also a full coverage splint worn either in the upper or lower arch. Its design ensures that there is an even contact when the teeth come together. With grinding movements of the jaw, the back teeth come apart while the front teeth touch, reducing the pressure on your back teeth. This reduces the pressure and force you are able to make with your jaw and hence help reduce jaw pain, headaches and other symptoms

  • In some cases we can recommend using BOTULINUM TOXIN (follow the link for more details) injections to weaken the main muscles used when grinding your teeth. This means the muscle is not able to generate as much force as it did before, which in turn alleviates the symptoms, tension and pain you experience. Don’t worry you will still be able to eat, smile and function as normal.

The treatment lasts between 3-6 months and requires maintenance appointments if you wish to maintain the beneficial effects of the treatment.
